Tesla has set the standard for futuristic, luxury performance cars with its all-electric Model S when it launched a few years ago. Making the move from a Model S to a seven-passenger Model X when your family outgrows the sedan, however, isn’t the no-brainer that Tesla would like it to be. At least, it wasn’t for the owner of the Tesla Model S P90’s shown here. He was looking to trade his S in on a bigger, but still environmentally responsible family hauler. His choice when it came time to write the check? A brand-new, 2017 Volvo XC90 T8 Plug-in Hybrid.

It’s a trade that makes sense, in a lot of ways. Fans of Tesla’s “big screen” dashboard will feel right at home in a Volvo XC90, which uses a similar 9″ touchscreen featuring Volvo’s proprietary Sensus operating system, or the available Apple CarPlay.

There’s more to it than a screen, however. Tesla drivers who have grown accustomed to avoiding gas stations will appreciate the Volvo’s electric-only mode, and might find the hybrid Volvo’s long-haul range more convenient for family road trips to grandma’s. Before you dismiss that problem as one Tesla’s solved with its (excellent) Supercharger network, consider that there won’t always be a Supercharger available when and where the kids need to take a potty break, you know?
Depending on your point of view, you could also argue that the Volvo XC90 is a trendier offering than Tesla’s troubled Model X. That vehicle has more of a “minivan” shape than Volvo’s fashionable SUV. Both the XC90 and the Model X offer three row seating and tons of cargo space while putting an emphasis on safety, which would be important selling points to anyone cross-shopping the two models.
What do you guys think? Does the Tesla’s all-electric power train make the Model X the more attractive people-mover, or do the long-haul flexibility and more modern, Swedish styling of the XC90 SUV overcome the Tesla’s green car cred? And- while I’m here- what about that Model S that got traded in? Any readers in the Chicagoland area interested in heading over to Oak Park to check it out?
